A variety of events are coming up this weekend. Here are a few of the highlights:
Festival of Trees: Mt. Sinai Baptist, 1227 Mt. Sinai Church Road, Shelby hosts the event offering holiday décor inspiration, heavy hors d’oeuvres and entrance to Peppermint Perch gift boutique. Event is open 3-8 p.m. Saturday and 2-5 p.m. Sunday. Tickets cost $12 in advance and $15 at the door. Call 704-482-5871 for tickets and more information. Veteran’s Day parade: Begins at Market and Graham streets in Shelby at 10 a.m., followed by an 11 a.m. service at historic court square. Inclement weather location is the Shelby City Park gym, 901 W. Sumter St., Shelby.
KMHS class of 1971: Class members reunite at 11:30 a.m. at Italian Garden, 213 E. King St., Kings Mountain. The luncheon is Dutch treat. No reservations are necessary. Bring a spouse or friend. Holiday Bazaar: Shelby High School band boosters host the event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on campus, 230 E. Dixon Blvd., Shelby. Vendors offer gifts and crafts.
Community Health Fair: Palmer Grove Baptist Church, 1606 Kingston Road, Kingstown hosts the event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. It’s at the life center. Bring your insurance card to receive a flu shot. Uninsured may pay $20 for the shot. Pneumonia shots are also available. There’s information on mental health, Medicare health plans, free screenings and education. Snacks are served and there will be children’s activities.
South Mountains State Park: Go for a short hike with a park ranger at 11 a.m. at South Mountains State Park, 3001 South Mountains Park Ave., Connelly Springs. Meet at the Jacob Fork parking area. Learn how to identify 10 common trees and learn why leaves change colors. There’s also “Hug-A-Tree” at 2 p.m. at the visitor’s center. It’s an opportunity for children to join a park ranger and learn basic techniques to aid survival if lost in the woods.
Southern gospel concert: Flint Hill Baptist Church, 2207 Flint Hill Church Road, Shelby, hosts the benefit event for Glenn Carter. It’s an evening of southern gospel music. Carter is a member of the group Four Anointed and is currently receiving treatment for cancer. The free event is from 6-8 p.m. Four Anointed will appear with the groups Resounding Glory and Mercy’s Touch. Singer Larry Ray will also appear. A love offering will be received for Carter’s expenses related to his cancer treatments.
Veteran’s Day celebration: Pleasant Ridge Baptist, 198 Pleasant Ridge Church Road, Shelby hosts the event at 10 a.m. Lt. Col. David Mansberger, senior chaplain at Arlington National Cemetery, will speak. Lunch is served after the service. Fly Fishing 101: Take an introductory class on fly fishing at 2 p.m. at South Mountains State Park, 3001 South Mountains Park Ave., Connelly Springs. Meet at the visitor center. Bring your personal equipment. Classes may vary based on interest and skill level of those participating. State fishing regulations apply.
